Pleasant Hill House is a tidewater style house that has been home to many families, from the Spaldings, to the Mudds and now the Wrights. Typical of middle class farm homes during the 19th century, Pleasant Hill House has been a post office, farmhouse and religious meeting house.
Basil Spalding fled religious persecution in England for a new life in the Colonies. The Spalding family first established Green’s Inheritance as a farm and then began construction on Pleasant Hill Manor House in 1760.
We’re most proud of our attachment to Mother Catherine Spalding who was born in the house in 1793. She became a nun and went on to found the Sisters of Nazareth in Kentucky, which is still active today.
Now on the National Register of Historic Places, our goal as caretakers is to ensure Pleasant Hill House is open for all to enjoy.
